To flush or not to flush

Hobbit | 12/12/2005 Mon December 12, 2005 @ 6:59 pm

So I got this magazine in the mail today about third trimester stuffs, fun mag to read, and very informative. One of the things in the magazine was an ad for flushable diapers. I was intrigued, as I try to be as “green”(environmentally conscience) as possible. We recycle (which Columbia makes easy by letting us take it all to our curb and they pick it up, but I did recycle in Knoxville as well, took things to the recyclie place myself) and try to be conscience of our environmental impact. Once we get the back yard all figured out, I would like to have a compost pile (can’t right now with the doggies). So the idea of flushable diapers appealed to me. (I know from personal experience that cloth diapers aren’t that great for baby’s skin, and the idea of my washing machine never really being clean…. made them a no go.) So I read up on the website about these diapers they are called gDiapers.

From their website it sounds good. I do understand that I shouldn’t believe everything I have heard or read, which is why I am going to investigate this idea a little more before making the decision to go this route. Got all those questions. Like is it really safe for the sewer system and all that. Dan and I are currently using cat litter made from corn, because its biodegradable, and completely safe for the sewer system, where as we were a little leery of the other litter we were using that had chemicals and stuff in it, but said it was flushable. These diapers apparently were made by a family that is “green” conscience, and they don’t have chemicals, yet do have the advantage over cloth diapers that they have absorbent gizmos in them that keep the baby’s little butt dry.

Knowing how the sewer system works, thanks to the History channel and also a book on Poop, that the kid I used to babysit had, I know that the non-watery content of the sewer system, called sludge is treated to kill any harmful bacteria, then is used as fertilizer and other good for the environment uses. So it really seems like a good idea, and cost wise, its just a fraction more expensive to buy the flushables than regular diapers from the store, but I think we can afford that to help out the environment. (According to several different places I looked, it takes a regular disposable diaper 500 years to decompose at a landfill, where as these go through that process in a compost pile in 50-120 days! yes I said days!) So the debate begins in my head, I think I might order me the starter kit to give it a good test out first, see how they are going to do flushing wise, and dryness wise before we make the final decision.

On the funny side of this debate, the outer pants that you put the flushable liners into, have a lower case g on the butt of the pants. So the baby has a little g on their butt. They call these pants “little g” pants, which Dan and I find very funny, along with the fact that if we go this route, Little Lisa will be wearing her initial on her butt!

Comments and suggestions welcome!

Nursery

Hobbit | Mon December 12, 2005 @ 6:45 pm

Dan and I are slowly working on putting the nursery together for Little Lisa. So far the room has a crib/changing table combo, a baby swing, a clothes hamper, a rocker/glider with ottoman, side table with small TV (that may or may not stay in the room for long), wire cubes for toy storage, wire cubes for clothes storage in the closet, and also the bassinet (which will get moved to our room when baby gets here, no need in it taking up space there now. We are working on getting all of the essentials together. Its definitely not something I would want to wait till the last minute to do! Once the holidays are over, and our company has come and gone, I will take pictures and put them up for all to see. Currently there is a queen sized mattress in the room taking up space since that’s where guests have to stay when they come till baby gets here.

SNOW

Hobbit | 12/8/2005 Thu December 8, 2005 @ 12:50 pm

A non baby post, first one of those in a while. Well we had a winter storm blow through here yesterday and last night, well and its still currently snowing too. Growing up in Arkansas you begin to not listen to the weather man when he says there is going to be inches of snow, well we learned last night that we can believe the weather men in Columbia. Cause we got what they said we would get, 2-4 inches of snow.

Keegan LOVES playing in the snow! I think its because she loves to run so much, and when its all white, she thinks its all level and she can run forever. Well we almost had a tragic accident in the back yard, as she was running, and running, and ran towards me, tried to stop but didn’t realize she was on the patio where I was standing, and slid into me. A 76 pound dog coming at a 6 month pregnant lady, not a good combo, luckily I had on my hiking boots and had traction, and didn’t fall.

Pictures of the house and Keegan in the snow.

Wow what can I say. Not much new on the baby front, other than my legs swelling, so I have to spend my time thinking about how much I am on my feet. But I was sitting and watching my belly really move, Lisa kicks really hard now, and makes my entire belly shake and anything thats on it, from cat to boob or what ever. I didn’t think in the beginning that I would ever like being pregnant, but its gotten to the point were I watch my belly move, and I sit there and just laugh, and it touches my heart. Its amazing how she hasn’t even been born yet and I have fallen so totally in love with my daughter, that one little kick that makes me smile, makes the bad parts of pregnancy totally worth it. I love being pregnant now, and as much as I know its going to get worse, that I am going to get very uncomfortable and such, and that labor isn’t going to be the easiest thing, but one kick makes it all go away! One little kick that brings a smile to my face, and into my heart, and makes me so greatful to be pregnant. Then the other smiles come to my face, when Dan talks to Lisa through my belly, and when he tells her good night every night. Ok enough gooshie gooshie stuff for now! More updates later.

So many people have said, do you have any pictures of you pregnant, well I am generally camera shy, (I like taking them, not being in them). But to please the masses…
