To flush or not to flush
Hobbit | 12/12/2005 Mon December 12, 2005 @ 6:59 pmSo I got this magazine in the mail today about third trimester stuffs, fun mag to read, and very informative. One of the things in the magazine was an ad for flushable diapers. I was intrigued, as I try to be as “green”(environmentally conscience) as possible. We recycle (which Columbia makes easy by letting us take it all to our curb and they pick it up, but I did recycle in Knoxville as well, took things to the recyclie place myself) and try to be conscience of our environmental impact. Once we get the back yard all figured out, I would like to have a compost pile (can’t right now with the doggies). So the idea of flushable diapers appealed to me. (I know from personal experience that cloth diapers aren’t that great for baby’s skin, and the idea of my washing machine never really being clean…. made them a no go.) So I read up on the website about these diapers they are called gDiapers.
From their website it sounds good. I do understand that I shouldn’t believe everything I have heard or read, which is why I am going to investigate this idea a little more before making the decision to go this route. Got all those questions. Like is it really safe for the sewer system and all that. Dan and I are currently using cat litter made from corn, because its biodegradable, and completely safe for the sewer system, where as we were a little leery of the other litter we were using that had chemicals and stuff in it, but said it was flushable. These diapers apparently were made by a family that is “green” conscience, and they don’t have chemicals, yet do have the advantage over cloth diapers that they have absorbent gizmos in them that keep the baby’s little butt dry.
Knowing how the sewer system works, thanks to the History channel and also a book on Poop, that the kid I used to babysit had, I know that the non-watery content of the sewer system, called sludge is treated to kill any harmful bacteria, then is used as fertilizer and other good for the environment uses. So it really seems like a good idea, and cost wise, its just a fraction more expensive to buy the flushables than regular diapers from the store, but I think we can afford that to help out the environment. (According to several different places I looked, it takes a regular disposable diaper 500 years to decompose at a landfill, where as these go through that process in a compost pile in 50-120 days! yes I said days!) So the debate begins in my head, I think I might order me the starter kit to give it a good test out first, see how they are going to do flushing wise, and dryness wise before we make the final decision.
On the funny side of this debate, the outer pants that you put the flushable liners into, have a lower case g on the butt of the pants. So the baby has a little g on their butt. They call these pants “little g” pants, which Dan and I find very funny, along with the fact that if we go this route, Little Lisa will be wearing her initial on her butt!

do it. do it.
I like the idea of the ‘little g’ diapers. and it will be hilarious to see a little kid running around with her initials on her butt. HAH!
