America On the Move Day

Today is America on the Move day. Tennessee has their own affiliate of this program, which is where I work at UT. It’s a simple program to help combat those pounds we seem to keep adding each year. Add 2000 steps to your daily routine, that’s roughly a mile, or about 15-20 minutes of walking, and eat 100 less calories, which isn’t much really, its the difference of a small fry versus a large fry, or a diet coke versus a regular coke.

More Info on Public Fears

The American Council on Science and Health publishes a review of unfounded health scares. This is the publication I read yesterday that caused my previous blog. Reading this made me realize how easily swayed the public is. Just makes you stop and think…

Blog the First (offically by Hobbit)

Well here goes a new chapter in my life. Let’s begin with one for the parental units. Blog is short for web log (weB LOG).

Ok here’s what I learned today, alot of things we think are bad for us AREN’T. DDT you may think causes cancer, but the mice in the study that determined this were fed moldy food that contained a known carcinogen (cancer causing agent). And the whole bird egg thinning thing, the study done on quails was faulty, because it is known that calcium is pertinent in egg shell thickness, yet these quails were fed a calcium deficient diet. There were millions of deaths related to malaria (which DDT was used to combat by killing mosquitoes)in the years before DDT came on the market, after it was on the market and used wide spread, there were 17 yes I said 17 deaths related to malaria (in 1963). After DDT was taken off the market the death toll was back in the millions within 3 years.

There is soooo much more, these are just two examples. Why did it come off the market then, well there’s public opinion, environmentalists were afraid the DDT was hurting the bird populations, but the research just didn’t back up their fears. Take all of this in mind when you think you don’t have say in what happens!!!

Welcome
